5 Ways in which Hum Aapke Hain Kaun Changed the Face of Indian Weddings
On this day, 25 years ago the iconic movie Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was released in the theatres. And just like that, the face of Indian weddings changed overnight! Tuffy became a household name while Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan further cemented their place in Bollywood. The film ran in the theatres for almost 50 weeks! So what was it about the movie that created such a stir? Prem’s shy demeanour coupled with Nisha’s playful nature changed the way people viewed romance. It was no longer a lewd thing to hide. The harmless flirting paved the way for lovers.
The classic hit of ‘94 is an extension of Sooraj Barjatiya’s beliefs. A big, happy family where there is no space for malice, where celebrations and love were in abundance with a cute furry friend. The realest aspect of the movie was the love that blossomed between Prem and Nisha right under the noses of their family! In India, the chances of meeting your partner at a wedding is higher than meeting them at a bar!
Speaking of weddings, HAHK has a major role to play in the modern day wedding scenario. It gave the nation a sneak peek into the North Indian riti-riwaz. This tearjerker is also called a 3 hour long wedding video by some! The movie has impacted the weddings that took place in the coming years. You’ll be surprised by the list!
1. Sangeet
The elaborate sangeet ceremony that we have nowadays became popular only after HAHK. Saroj Khan’s choreography and Madhuri Dixit’s grace cast a spell on the audience. Songs like Didi Tera Devar Deewana is still a hit and often played during sangeets!
2. Outfits
If you’ve watched the movie, you know that Nisha’s outfits were on point. The 9 yards satin violet saree with the backless blouse was a refreshing change in the 90’s. Yeah, yeah a few jaws dropped and eyes widened but the saree was gorgeous for it’s time! But what caught people’s attention was the outfit she wore for the wedding. Almost every other girl got the green and white lehenga stitched because of Madhuri!
3. Joota Churai
Joota churai, a prevalent ceremony in the North soon became a part of every wedding. The song Joote Dedo Paise Lelo inspired bridesmaids and groomsmen to indulge in extra fun during the wedding. Nowadays a wedding is incomplete without the joota churai ceremony!
4. Musical
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun provided the audience with 18 songs that would last for a lifetime! The songs have stood the test of time and are quite popular till date! HAHK was a true Bollywood musical, if you ask me!
5. Tuffy
A blog about HAHK that doesn’t talk about Tuffy?! Sorry, such a blog shouldn’t exist! The cute little white ball of fur became an instant hit. Not only was he responsible for the match (umpire), but also for Prem and Nisha’s marriage! He saved the day by delivering the letter and necklace to the wrong person. The red bow tie added to his cuteness!
We couldn’t have asked for more from Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Thank you, Suraj Barjatya!
