Wedding Rules That You CAN Break! – Wedding Advice #16

Wedding Rules That You CAN Break! – Wedding Advice #16

There are dozens of wedding traditions that couples have been abiding by for decades. While these traditions may be sentimental for some, they’re by no means hard-and-fast rules to structure your day around. So we’ve rounded up a few longstanding wedding customs you can put a personal twist on. After all, rules were made to be broken right?

THE BRIDE’S FAMILY SHOULD FOOT THE BILL

THE BRIDE’S FAMILY SHOULD FOOT THE BILL

Are you still living in the 1980s? This tradition is so over it’s not funny. If parents want to donate money towards the big day, that’s great! But the burden is no longer placed solely on the bride’s side. In fact, most couples these days are paying for the wedding themselves.

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE CAN’T HOST OR ATTEND THE BACHELORETTE PARTY

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE CAN’T HOST OR ATTEND THE BACHELORETTE PARTY

Anyone can throw your shower! People used to think it was rude for the bride’s mother to host a party where the sole purpose was for her daughter to get gifts. Other close family members, like sisters, were similarly forbidden from hosting. We didn’t get this then, and we don’t get it now, and luckily, today’s mothers of the bride are ignoring the passé etiquette. So encourage your mom to throw yours if you think that she wants to!

BRIDES MUST WEAR RED

Wear whatever you want! Sure, most brides go the traditional reds, but for your wedding day attire, as long as you feel fabulous in your outfit, it can be any color or style. Warning: Your fashion choices may wind up shocking your older guests. If you’d prefer that your look pleases the crowd but aren’t willing to go totally traditional, try working in a hint of color via your shoes, jewelry or a hair accessory.

WEDDING REGISTRY SHOULD BE SHARED BY WORD OF MOUTH

WEDDING REGISTRY SHOULD BE SHARED BY WORD OF MOUTH

It used to be considered bad etiquette to spread the news of the registry any way other than by word of mouth. But that rule was created when everyone going to the wedding lived a couple blocks from each other. Now guests appreciate having these details in advance so they don’t have go searching for what the couple want. While this rule has changed over time, it is still in poor taste to put any gift-giving guidelines on your wedding invitations.

YOU CAN’T ASK FOR CASH

YOU CAN’T ASK FOR CASH

Giving money is becoming more popular as modern couples tend to get too creative with their registries. This does not mean you can’t have your traditional registry list for those old-fashioned guests who may want to buy you a more conventional gift or those who feel uncomfortable giving cash.

We love a good first look! While that moment when a bride or groom sees his or her future spouse coming down the aisle is super sweet, we also love that couples have the flexibility to see each other prior to the “I dos.”

Couples and their photographers these days are getting creative with finding time to take bridal party and couple portraits in between the celebration and not after you’re all worked up with having a blast. It’s on the go!

GIVING OUT FAVOURS

GIVING OUT FAVOURS

Skipping out on party favors is an okay thing to do at modern weddings. It will cut cost down and even save you from buying items that most of your guests will forget to take home with them.
